Phillip and Susannah Shull family
Details of Phillip and Susannah Shull family prior to 1810 Knox County Kentucky remain to be found
by present day researchers of that line.
Phillip is on the 1809 and 1810 Knox County, KY tax rolls and he is on the 1810 Knox Cty., KY census.
At that time he is shown to have 3 boys and 1 girl under 10 years of age.
According to a historical marker erected in 1987 they arrived in Washington County, Indiana in 1812.
The marker states that he cleared the timber for the first courthouse and was a Justice of the Peace.
Phillip died January 1820 and Susannah died in 1823. She is on the 1820 Washington County, IN census
with 3 males under 18, and 5 females under 15 and one male (19-25)
This (19-25) male is probably a boarder or hired help or relative.
After Susannah's death in 1823 John Sapp was made Guardian of the children. * see transcript of guardianship
He was chosen as such by the three eldest children John, Leonard and Catherine.
John Sapp's relationship to the family is undetermined although it is thought that Susannah's maiden name
might be Sapp
NOTE: There is an unconfirmed family story that Phillip came from Lyons, France in 1800 and that
Leonard was born there.
Dates and places of birth for the siblings of Leonard tend to discredit this story.
There were three other Shulls on the 1810 Knox County, KY census. Frederick, John and Joseph Shull
Joseph Shull also came to Washington County, IN at or near same time as Phillip.
It is unknown what became of Frederick and John.
Speculation is that these four Shulls are related.
**following information is from descendant of Phillip's son Gabriel C. Shull**
Phillip served as a Justice of the Peace in Washington County, Indiana in 1818.
He is the recorded Justice of the Peace at a wedding between Sarah Johnson and Joseph Shull on March 19, 1818.
Phillip was the appointed overseer of the road from Salem to the county line by way of Wilcrens from
the Court House in Salem to the Washington Township line.
Phillip is stated as being of Campbellite faith.

After Malinda Jane died Jesse Tate married Amanda Ellen Kemp
(Daughter of Chilion Kemp and Mary Ann Jones) m. Dec. 1879
They had one son Jesse b. 1881 (That is the only child I have found for them.)
In 1870 John Shull and son George were living with Jesse and Malinda Tate.
They are in the 1880 census in Henderson Co. Ill.
John died in 1871.
They were probably there through the 1890's also and until Jesse died as
he and Malinda are buried in the Kemp cemetery there in Henderson Co.

I do not have any information on Leonard, but his son, Dawson G. Shull married Amanda Adaline Rogers
in Washington County. Sept. 24, 1859 Their children were: Amanda E., Silas G., Volney T., Mattie A., Laura F.
I am not related to the Shulls, I have this info because Amanda Adaline Rogers was a half sister
to my Caswell Maxwell.
