JOSEPH F. SHULL
Joseph first appears in Knox County Kentucky in 1810.
He is on 1810 Knox County Census along with Frederick, John and Phillip Shull
(relationship of these four Shulls has not been determined)
He appears on Knox County 1810 Tax List, but is not on prior tax lists.
Frederick, John and Phillip are on1809 tax list. Joseph is not.
He may have been born in North Carolina (indicated as such on 1880 IL census re-Nelson Shull , son)
However, census (1880 IN) daughter Nancy Shull Smith Redifer indicates Joseph born VA
He was born between 1786 -1794 according to 1810 census (age group of 16 - 24)
He married Polly Cutbirth March 22, 1810 at Knox County, KY. (Barbourville)
Three daughters: (Lovina b. 1811 TN ) ( Lucinda 1813 KY) (Nancy 1815 IN)
Joseph next shows up in Washington County Indiana by 1818.
Polly probably died in Indiana as that is where daughter Nancy Shull Smith Redifer was born in 1815.
Joseph and Polly may have been born in Virginia according to 1900 census of daughter Nancy.
He married Sarah Wright Johnson March 19, 1818 Washington County, IN.
1820 Washington County census shows Joseph has 4 boys and 4 girls
This is second marriage for both.
Wedding ceremony performed by Phillip Shull, Justice of Peace
Joseph/Sarah had (Elizabeth Ann b. 7/7/1820 IN)(Phillip b. 5/20/1822 IN)(Nelson b. 2/5/1824 IN)
Joseph/Sarah settled in Vigo County, IN 1830 - 1840.
Joseph has two land patents on record Vigo Cty.
#10975 dd Aug. 1, 1837 and #20517 dd August 1, 1839
Joseph died September 1846 Vigo County, IN (Nevins, Twp.?)
Sarah died 1849 < Vigo County, IN (Nevins, Twp.?) >
Those that did Washington County, IN cemetery book seem to think she is buried in Knox County, IN.
How they came to that conclusion is unknown.
Sarah married her first husband Josiah Johnson 1796 in NC. They were in Washington County IN by
1808 and he died 1813. They had (12) children.
Josiah was an uncle to Pres. Andrew Johnson according to Johnson family lore.
From the minutes of the Washington
County Commissioners meetings 10 Feb. 1817 to 21Aug. 1893.
Pg. 36 Joseph Shull appointed overseer of the road to
Jeffersonville by way of Wilcoxs from the town
(Salem?) boundry to the Middle Fork of Blue River.
13 May 1822 Replaced by Stephen Hole
12 May 1823 ...to serve on petit juries for 1823
Hoosier journal of Ancestry 57, 58, 59
Joseph Shull was a Sale bill-buyer at estate sales in
1821,1822,1824
(from research by R. Schull 10/02/03
SPECULATION is that the four Shulls on 1810 Knox County KY census are related with
Frederick being the father and the others brothers.
The census also had three sons for Frederick under age of 16.
One of these MIGHT be Lewis Shull (born 1800 re 1850 Vigo Cty., IN census) that showed up in
Washington Cty., IN by October 1821at which time he married Joseph's stepdaughter Nancy Johnson.
Another MIGHT be James Henry Shull that married Polly Short November 6, 1823 Washington County, IN.
Another MIGHT be Isaac Shull who appeared in Clay and Vigo Counties IN by 1830
Joseph and Phillip both migrated to Washington County, IN prior to 1818.
Phillip died January 1820 prior to 1820 census. Susannah Shull on 1820 census is his widow.
Phillip was Justice of the Peace in Washington County, Indiana in 1818.
Phllip reportedly cleared the land for the original courthouse.
He is the recorded Justice of the Peace at wedding of Sarah Wright Johnson and Joseph Shull.
Frederick and John not documented after 1810 KY.
(Several Fredericks and Johns - just need to sort them out.)
Recent (2006) DNA testing indicates that a direct male descendant of Joseph is a descendant of Frederick Scholl that
immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1728 from Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Records as to the parents/siblings of Joseph Shull have not been located. (missing generation)
