Recent DNA tests have confirmed that this line of Shull is related to the four Shulls in Washington County, IN in 1820's.
DNA does not tell us HOW they are connected.
The how is still a matter of speculation
A descendant of Simon Phillip Shull and descendants of Joseph Shull, Lewis Shull and Phillip Shull have matched 37/37 on Y-DNA Markers (100% match)
(details of these Shulls posted elsewhere on this website)

There is a missing generation which would be the parents/siblings of:
Joseph Shull
Phillip Shull
Lewis Shull
(James) Henry Shull.
Records for this generation have not been found.
Exact relationship of these four Shulls is unknown.

!NOTE: John Frederick Scholl was born in Europe before his father's immigration to Pennsylvania. He moved to Watauga County, NC. He seems likely to be that Frederick Shull who appeared in the 1790 Census in the 3rd Co. of the Morgantown District of Burke County, 1-3-6, as "Fred Shell," along with sons Fred Shull, Jr., 2-1-2. Simon Shell, 1-0-1, and John Shell, 2-4-4, in the 2nd Co of same district, all of whom are known to Shull in their descendants; married April 30, 1759, at Tohickon Church, by Rev. Egidius Hecker, to Gertrude Merckel.

Family legend, as given in John P. Arthur's History of Western NC pp. k91 (sic), 351f, sic) says that this Frederick and wife came from Germany about the middle of the XVIIIth century, that he was a (weaver by trade and paid his passage by his work, that his wife's name was Charity. This seems not quite possible, and for the time being it seems more probable that the German "Kosenamen" or pet name for Gertrude, namely, Gertie, became misunderstood and by later descendants taken for Charity, a transformation known to have occurred in several other cases. From the Shull-Mast Book which appears to be copied from Scholl, Sholl, Shull genealogy book.

THIS LEGEND MIGHT APPLY TO FREDERICK and MARY BARBARA HERTZEL BUT NOT LIKELY TO BE JOHN FREDERICK and GERTRUDE "Charity" MERCKEL AS THEY MARRIED APRIL 1759 IN PENNSYLVANIA.

The Shulls' origins were in Bavaria. John Frederick's parents, Frederick and Maria Barbara, had sailed across to Philadelphia in 1728 and settled in Pennsylvania.
John Frederick and Gertrude married in Pennsylvania (1759) and moved south to Lincoln Co, NC, where Simon was born. Simon and Mary were married in Burke Co in 1790.
Sometimes before 1793, John Frederick Shull, his wife Gertrude, and their son Simon and his wife Mary came and settled upriver from the Joseph Mast property in what is now Watauga, Cty., NC

d. ________ (1790?)
married: Gertrude Charity MERCHEL/MERCKEL, April 10, 1759, PA
b. Abt. 1735, PA
d. ______ Ashe Co, NC (1790?)

There is a gravemarker (?Memorial Stone?) in Simon/Frederick Cemetery on Broadstone Rd
in Watauga Cty., NC with inscription "Frederick Shull and Wife Charity Shull 1765"

FOUR children of John Frederick and Gertrude MERCKEL SCHOLL/SHULL are:

(1) FREDERICK SHULL,
b. Bef. 1767. (?)
d. __________
m. unknown (perhaps "Sarah"____)
[ 1790 census 2.1.2.0.0 ][ 1800 census 4.1.1.0.1.~.1.2.2.1.0 ]

(2) ELIZABETH SHULL
b. _____ (Baptised April 5, 1764 (?) at Indian Creek, PA)
[no further information on her]

(3) SIMON PHILLIP SHULL
b. October 24, 1764
...........m. Mary Ormaterfer SHEIFLER
children: ( 8 ) documented below
[ 1790 census 1 0 1 0 0 ] [1800 census 1.2.0 0.1..~..2.2.0.1.0 }

(4) JOHN SHULL,
b. _____
d. _____ m. unknown
[ 1790 cebsus 2.4.4.0.0 ] [1800 census, not found]
(has erroneously been thought to be married to Esther Senn)

This line is shown in the Scholl, Sholl, Shull book by John William Scholl starting page 18.
Information in the book, pages 21 & 33, pertaining to John Shull/Esther Senn appears to be
erroneous
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This John Shull (#1) and another John Shull (#2), the son of John Henry Schole(Sholl) (Shull) and
Catherine Hersenger have been confused with each other.
Apparently the author of "Scholl, Sholl, Shull" genealogy book confused the two John Shulls
resulting in the incorrect information that this (#1) John Shull married Esther Senn and located in SC.

John Shull (#2) appears to be one that married Esther Senn and settled in Lexington County SC.

Information in "Lexington Genealogical Exchange" Volume 8, Book 2, Pg. 79 a publication of
Lexington County, SC Genealogical Society contains history of John Henry Schole (Shull) family
who came to SC as early as February 1752.

NOTE: ( 1 ) Frederick OR ( 4 ) John are likely possibilities to be parent of Joseph, Phillip, Lewis and
(James) Henry Shull the four Shulls in Washington County, IN in 1820.
Records as to the parents of these four Shulls have yet to be found.
Descendants of these four Shulls have been documented.
